Currency Symbol of Indian Rupee - भारतीय रुपया का मुद्रा प्रतीक

The symbol of Indian Rupee typifies India's international identity for money transactions and economic strength. The Indian Rupee sign is an allegory of Indian ethos. The symbol is an amalgam of Devanagari "Ra" and the Roman Capital "R" with two parallel horizontal stripes running at the top representing the national flag and also the "equal to" sign.

The Indian Rupee sign was adopted by the Government of India on 15th July, 2010. The symbol, conceptualised and designed by Udaya Kumar, a post graduate in Design from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, has been chosen from thousands of concept entries received by the Ministry of Finance through an open competition among resident Indian nationals. The process of establishing and implementing this new identity is underway through various digital technology and computer applications.

भारतीय रुपए का प्रतीक चिन्ह अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर आदान-प्रदान तथा आर्थिक संबलता को परिलक्षित कर रहा है। रुपए का चिन्ह भारत के लोकाचार का भी एक रूपक है। रुपए का यह नया प्रतीक देवनागरी लिपि के 'र' और रोमन लिपि के अक्षर 'आर' को मिला कर बना है, जिसमें एक क्षैतिज रेखा भी बनी हुई है। यह रेखा हमारे राष्ट्रध्वज तथा बराबर के चिन्ह को प्रतिबिंबित करती है। भारत सरकार ने 15 जुलाई 2010 को इस चिन्ह को स्वीकार कर लिया है। यह चिन्ह भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान (आईआईटी), मुम्बई के पोस्ट ग्रेजुएट डिजाइन श्री डी. उदय कुमार ने बनाया है। इस चिन्ह को वित्त मंत्रालय द्वारा आयोजित एक खुली प्रतियोगिता में प्राप्त हजारों डिजायनों में से चुना गया है। इस प्रतियोगिता में भारतीय नागरिकों से रुपए के नए चिन्ह के लिए डिजाइन आमंत्रित किए गए थे। इस चिन्ह को डिजीटल तकनीक तथा कम्प्यूटर प्रोग्राम में स्थापित करने की प्रक्रिया चल रही है।
